Technological changes picking up speed every single day, leaving yesterdays gadgets behind on the scrap heap and the non stop development or breakdown, depending on which side you’re on, of everyday language. There has never been a shorter space in time between changes in our culture and way of communicating, so what happens when we attempt to communicate with our utopian, neo futurist friends of centuries to come? Compared to the deciphering of the Egyptian hieroglyphics this breakdown of communication may be immense. Will our everyday use of signs and symbols, colours and diagrams mean anything to an extremely developed, or even worse, reverted neandertal-like species in the far off future? An interesting look into this subject has been made by John stang here:

The latest exhibition to be held at the Wellcome collection looks at the ‘world’ of sleep. The exhibition covers the history of scientific research into why we sleep, the psychology of the dreams we encounter within sleep and modern artistic and scientific takes on the subject of dreams.
An interesting part of the exhibition is the collection paintings by Jane Gifford. Jane Gifford is a contemporary artist living in London who makes diaries, paintings, drawings and installations based upon her dreams. The series of paintins based on her dreams gives an amazing insight into a consciousness of a person you can hardly ever comprehend. It makes you realise just how private and in a way, alone you are within your dreams. However much you want to share a dream with somebody the next morning it is near impossible to express your experiences. Jane Gifford manages to bring her personal and abstract experiences to her audience in a way that portrays the essence of each hallucinatory story.

Before he releases his biography on ‘his remarkable life, from the vibrant surroundings of pre-war Shanghai to his arrival in post-war Britain’, JG Ballard gives a talk at the Southbank centre. covering his struggles to come to grips with the cultural changes at the end of the second World war and the tragic death of his wife this will surely be a rare insight to one of britain’s best minds.
